Summer is officially here! As the temperatures soar, there is nothing quite like watching children splash around, laugh, and cool down in the water. Whether it is a paddling pool in the garden, a trip to the local beach, or structured water play, it’s the ultimate seasonal highlight.

However, beneath all the fun, hot weather brings some serious responsibilities. Water accidents can happen in the blink of an eye, and the summer sun introduces other risks like dehydration and sunburn.

As a nursery dedicated to the well-being of your little ones, we believe that fun and safety go hand-in-hand. Here is our comprehensive guide to keeping your children safe, hydrated, and happy during the hottest months of the year.

1. Water Safety: Vigilance is Key

The most important rule of water play is simple but absolute: constant, undistracted supervision.

Unlike what we often see in movies, real-life drowning is rarely loud, splashy, or dramatic. It can happen quickly and silently in just a few centimetres of water.

Essential Water Safety Rules:

  • The "Touch Supervision" Rule: For toddlers and young children, an adult should always be within arm's reach. Put down the smartphone, step away from the book, and keep your eyes on the water.

  • Empty Paddling Pools Immediately: Once playtime is over, tip the water out of paddling pools and buckets right away. Flip them upside down so they don't collect rainwater later.

  • Be Beach Smart: If you are heading to the coast, only swim at lifeguarded beaches. Teach older children to read beach flags (like the red and yellow flags that show the safe swim zone) and beware of strong currents.

2. Beat the Heat: Hydration from the Inside Out

When children are busy playing, they rarely notice they are getting thirsty. During hot weather, their bodies lose fluids rapidly through sweat, sky-rocketing the risk of dehydration.

Tip: Don't wait for your child to ask for a drink. By the time they complain of thirst, they may already be mildly dehydrated.

How to Keep Kids Hydrated:

  • Make it a Habit: Offer water regularly throughout the day. Set a timer if you need a reminder, or make a game out of "hydration breaks."

  • Upgrade the Fun: If plain water gets a boring refusal, try infusing it with slices of strawberries, cucumber, or mint. Reusable, colorful water bottles with their favorite characters can also work wonders.

  • Hydrating Snacks: Pack snacks with high water content, such as watermelon slices, cucumber sticks, oranges, and strawberries.

3. Sun Protection: The Triple Threat

Water acts like a giant mirror, reflecting and intensifying the sun’s harmful UV rays. This means children can burn much faster while playing in water than they would on dry land.

To keep their delicate skin protected, remember the golden trio: Hats, Sunscreen, and Shade.

Protection Layer

What to Look For

Sunscreen

Use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Reapply every two hours, and immediately after swimming or towel-drying.

Sun Hats & Clothing

Opt for wide-brimmed hats that protect the face, ears, and back of the neck. UV-protection swimwear (rash guards) is also fantastic for water play.

Shade

Seek out shade or set up a pop-up tent, especially during the peak heat hours of the day (usually between 11:00 AM and 3:00 PM).

How We Do It At Our Nursery

At our nursery, we absolutely love outdoor learning and sensory water play—but safety is our foundational bedrock.

Whenever we set up water activities, we ensure strict staff-to-child ratios so that every single child is closely and continuously supervised. We also weave sun safety into our daily routine, prompting regular water breaks, ensuring hats are firmly on heads, and reapplying sunscreen before heading out.

By combining rigorous water safety with mindful hydration and sun protection, we ensure that our children can enjoy all the magical perks of summer in a secure, healthy, and happy environment.
