The festive season has officially arrived at Ditcham Dragonflies, and our nursery has been buzzing with excitement! Over the last few weeks, the children have been fully immersed in the magic of December, leading the way as we explored all their favourite things about Christmas.

From sparkly textures to special animal visitors, here is a peek at what our little elves have been up to.

❄️ A Winter Wonderland for the Senses

We believe that children learn best when they can touch, feel, and explore. Our Christmas-themed sensory play has been a massive hit, allowing the children to dive into the season's textures.

The children loved diving into trays filled with shredded wrapping paper—listening to the crunch and rustle as they searched for hidden treasures. We also introduced some soft, tactile play with fluffy snowballs made from wool, which were perfect for gentle throwing and squishing!

To add a bit of sparkle, we explored shiny baubles, talking about the different colours and watching our reflections in the mirrored surfaces. It was a wonderful way to spark curiosity and descriptive language.

🎨 Creative Decorating and Games

It wouldn't be Christmas without a tree (or three)! The children tapped into their inner interior designers, working together to decorate trees of all sizes. Whether reaching high for the big branches or carefully placing decorations on the mini-trees, they practised their fine motor skills and creative flair.

We also made time for some fun group games. The children have been practising their turn-taking and observation skills playing festive "Snap". It was wonderful to hear the giggles and cheers as they matched up Santas, reindeer, and snowmen!

🫏 A Very Special Visitor

The absolute highlight of our festive period, however, was a surprise visit from a four-legged friend. The children were delighted to head outside to meet a visiting donkey!

It was a magical moment watching the children gently approach, pet, and observe the donkey. They were so calm and kind, asking questions and learning all about our furry guest. It really brought the Christmas story to life in a tangible, memorable way.
